Learning objective

Talking about Suicide: 10 Tools (TAS10) is a brief but impactful suicide prevention training session that takes people from a place of fear ('What if I say the wrong thing?’ / ‘What if I make things worse?’ / ‘What if put the idea in their head?’) to a place of confidence (‘I can make a difference’ / ‘I’m not afraid to talk about suicide’ / ‘I know what I’m looking out for, and I know what I can say/do’)

Anyone can learn to talk about suicide with confidence, clarity and compassion. And we must - because most people who die by suicide don’t get as far as talking to a doctor or counsellor. It falls to all of us to learn to trust our gut, and to bravely walk towards someone in pain, rather than away from them due to fear. Suicide is everyone’s business.

TAS10 was created by Rose Rowkins (Start the Conversation) and Ann Feloy (Olly’s Future) shortly after Ann’s son Olly took his own life in 2017, two days before his 23rd birthday. Heartbreakingly, Ann says that with TAS10, she wanted to create a short training that “gives people the tools I wish I’d had to better help my son when he needed me most.”

Agenda

Here's and outline of the Learning Outcomes:

  • Recognise how the prevalence of suicide in our society means more open conversation is needed
  • Discuss common fears and myths about suicide which can prevent life-saving conversations from taking place
  • Compare outdates, judgemental language about suicide with safer, more helpful alternatives
  • Identify the signs that someone is struggling, possibly with thoughts of suicide
  • Understand how to ask someone directly if they are thinking of suicide
  • Reflect on and improve your listening skills
  • Examine your personal limits when talking to someone thinking of suicide and connect them with further support
  • Use 10 practical tools for talking about suicide with confidence and competence
