Building Safety Research Group - First Meeting

Our Building Safety Research Group met for the first time last week, we hear from our Head of Operations David Ashby on how they got on. We’ll be posting regular updates to this blog as they progress – watch this space!

The Building Safety group met on 11 February. Our chair, Paul Nash, gave an overview on the topic with an emphasis on the Building Safety Bill and the many documents that have been produced around this subject matter. The group agreed that the objective is to develop practical procurement guidance for members that is clear, succinct and easy to read/use.

The Inside Housing survey results revealed that 70% of respondents said building safety was their greatest concern. Almost 70% of respondents identified a need for better information, peer to peer learning and guidance on securing quality services through a process toolkit. There was also still a large proportion of respondents that weight price more heavily than quality (43%).

The group agreed to look at four key areas, leadership, achieving compliance, competence and procurement. Procurement will look at price and quality together, using the Trowers and Hamlins white paper on price models to look at what good price models look like. The use of worked examples and templates to provide a toolkit for members will be a key consideration to make the guidance toolkit a practical document to meet the main objective.. A key question to be asked throughout the process is; what does good look like?

Three sub-groups have been formed to look at the topics of:

Competence
Procurement

These sub-groups will feed back into the main group for production of the final report. We’ve a group of industry leaders really looking to make a difference to our sector’s drive for building safety – watch this space to see how their conversations progress!
